Manual
Handling Training
Ergosmart Consulting provide customised
and interactive manual handling training
to organisations across a wide range of
industries, from manually intensive work
in the manufacturing industry to support
staff in a corporate office environment.
The training objectives are tailored to
suit an organisation, taking into
account their own particular manual
handling and postural requirements. The
focus of our training is on providing
participants with comprehensive
background information to understand the
importance of safe manual handling
relevant to different body parts and
various tasks, not just lifting.
Participants are provided an opportunity
to participate in relevant practical
tasks as part of the training, as this
is often the most effective method of
learning in the context of manual
handling.
Office Ergonomics Training
Ergosmart Consulting recognise the need
for employers to be proactive in
minimising risks to the health and
safety of employees who undertake desk
based and computer based work. Our
Office Ergonomic Training packages are a
very popular service utilised by many
organisations as a preventative strategy
to avoid occupational overuse injuries.
The training aims to provide
participants with the background
knowledge and practical skills to
highlight bad habits related to work
postures, equipment set up and work
processes and encourage behaviour that
improves comfort and productivity. The
training recognises that correct
equipment set up is only part of the
control strategy for prevention of
injury. Equally as important is how
individuals interact with their work and
equipment.
Training can be provided in a number of
different formats according to an
organisation’s needs. Some options for
training formats are listed below (these
can be used in any combination):
Group Presentation (approximately
1 hour duration) covering:
Anatomy and mechanics of the spine
Muscle use and postural awareness
Sitting posture
Workstation equipment set up
Stretch breaks
Maintaining a healthy body to prevent injury
Individual Workstation Review
Workstation reviews would normally
follow the group presentation to address
any particular issues and reinforce the
presentation content. Individual reviews
take approximately 10-15 minutes. A
report is then compiled summarising any
identified issues and recommendations
from the individual workstation reviews.
Train the Trainer
For some large organisations, nominated
staff can be trained using an ergonomic
workstation checklist to provide an
“in-house” training and assessment
service on an ongoing basis. A more
intensive training session would be
provided to these individuals following
a similar format to the group training
above. In addition, the Train the
Trainer would involve a significant
practical component to ensure that staff
are competent in using the workstation
checklist with other employees (for
example, at induction).
Injury Prevention Training
-
Effective injury prevention involves
more than just good manual handling.
Injury Prevention Training can include
topics such as the Risk Management
process, analysis of risks unique to the
workplace, education regarding basic
anatomy and posture, identification of
individual risk factors (e.g. do you
have tight hamstrings?), specific
exercises to target areas under strain,
as well as covering areas such as
nutrition, fatigue, dehydration,
temperature and other general health
issues that can impact on safety at
work. Employee participation in the
development of a customised program is
preferred, as this helps to accurately
identify the areas of most relevance,
encourages “ownership” of the program,
whilst also helping employers to meet
their obligations in relation to
consultation.
